
What Actually Determines How Long a Driveway Lasts
A finished driveway looks like a simple slab of grey concrete, but its lifespan is decided almost entirely by three things that happen before or during the pour: how thoroughly the base was excavated and compacted, whether the reinforcement was correctly sized for the load, and how the concrete was cured in the days after pouring. Get those three right and a driveway will comfortably serve a property for 25-plus years. Get any of them wrong and cracking, sinking or surface failure can show up within the first twelve months.

The Shortcuts That Crack a Driveway Early
Nearly every early-failure driveway we're called out to assess traces back to one of these causes:
- Inadequate base compaction. Skipping proper excavation and layered compaction of road base leaves a slab sitting on ground that will settle unevenly, particularly on Adelaide's reactive clay soils.
- Under-sized reinforcement. A driveway taking regular vehicle, trailer or delivery truck loads needs reinforcement sized to that load — a token layer of light mesh isn't enough for anything beyond light passenger use.
- No or poorly placed control joints. Concrete will crack somewhere as it shrinks and the ground moves beneath it — joints tell it where to crack cleanly. Skip them, or space them too far apart, and cracking happens randomly across panels instead.
- Rushed curing. Concrete needs to retain moisture as it cures, especially in Adelaide's heat. A slab left to dry out too fast in the first 24–48 hours is prone to plastic shrinkage cracking before it's even reached meaningful strength.

- Sunken sections or pooling water that wasn't there when the driveway was new
- Cracking radiating from corners or running diagonally across a panel rather than along a joint line
Getting the Most Out of a New Driveway
Ongoing maintenance for a properly poured driveway is genuinely minimal. Keep an eye on joint sealant and reseal it if it fails, address any drainage issues promptly rather than letting water pool against the slab edge, and if you notice a crack with vertical displacement, get it assessed early rather than waiting — a small, stable issue is far cheaper to address than one that's been allowed to worsen for years.
